Following a hotly-contested race, the Conservative Party candidate and current Undersheriff James M. Szczesniak called his Republican opponent, Investigator Thomas Dougherty, to concede the race for Livingston County Sheriff. In an Election night address given at the Lima Golf and Country Club, Szczesniak said:
This has not been an easy race, and I tip my hat to Mr. Dougherty for having fought fiercely over these past months. The race for sheriff has provided a tremendous opportunity for Livingston County residents to raise their collective voice. Turnout was high, but the people have spoken.
I thank Sheriff York for 28 years of mentoring. I am grateful to the Conservative Party for giving me the opportunity to carry their party’s banner in this race. My campaign team has been incredible, and I could not have even thought of attempting this without the support of my family. This has truly been a team effort.
With the race now being decided, it is time to put the election behind us and begin the healing of the Sheriff’s Department and this community. For too long this race has divided our Department and this county. Both my opponent and I desire to see Livingston County remain a safe community. We may have different approaches about how to get there, but we each desire the same destination.
